Custom-Designed Sprinkler Systems for Massachusetts Properties

A properly installed irrigation system does more than water your lawn. It delivers the right amount of water to every zone of your property, accounting for sun exposure, soil type, grade changes, and plant material, so nothing gets too much and nothing gets too little.

Berardi Irrigation handles the full installation process from start to finish. We measure your water pressure and flow rate, design the zone layout, select the right heads for each area, run the pipe, wire the controller, and test the entire system before we leave. Every installation uses polyethylene pipe, which flexes during Massachusetts freeze cycles instead of cracking the way rigid PVC can.

What Goes Into Your System

Every Component of a Berardi Irrigation Installation

A reliable sprinkler system is more than heads in the ground. Here's what we design, install, and configure as part of every project.

01

Custom System Design

We walk your property, test water pressure and GPM flow rate, map sun exposure and grade changes, and design a zone layout that delivers even coverage without waste.

02

Trenching & Pipe Installation

Lines are trenched four to eight inches deep and run with flexible polyethylene pipe, which handles Massachusetts freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or splitting.

03

Valve & Zone Assembly

Each zone gets its own valve for independent control. We separate rotors from fixed sprays, and isolate garden beds and slopes on dedicated zones for precise watering.

04

Backflow Prevention

Massachusetts plumbing code requires a backflow preventer on every irrigation system to protect your drinking water. We install and certify the correct device for your property.

05

Smart Controller Setup

We install and program Wi-Fi-enabled controllers from Hunter and Rain Bird that let you manage schedules from your phone, sync with local weather data, and comply with town watering restrictions.

06

Testing & Calibration

Before we leave, we run every zone, verify head-to-head coverage, balance pressure across the system, and walk through the controller operation with you.

Our Installation Process

How a Berardi Installation Works From Start to Finish

Every project follows the same proven sequence. Here's what happens from the first call to the moment your system is running.

1

Property Assessment

We walk the property with you, test your water pressure and flow rate at the source, evaluate soil conditions and terrain, and identify any special considerations like slopes, garden beds, or existing hardscaping.

2

System Design & Zone Mapping

Based on the assessment, we design a custom zone layout that accounts for your property's specific dimensions, plant material, sun exposure, and water capacity. Rotors and fixed sprays are always zoned separately for balanced pressure and even coverage.

3

Installation Day

Our crew trenches the lines, lays the pipe, sets the valve manifold, installs the backflow preventer, and places every sprinkler head according to the design plan. Most residential installations are completed in one to two days.

4

Controller Programming

We mount and wire the controller, program the zone schedule and run times, connect Wi-Fi if your controller supports it, and configure rain sensor or weather sync features so the system adjusts automatically.

5

Full-System Test & Walkthrough

We run every zone while you watch, verify head-to-head coverage and pressure balance, make final adjustments to spray arcs and timing, and walk you through how to operate the controller and adjust schedules.

Installation FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Irrigation Installation

How long does it take to install a sprinkler system?

Most residential installations are completed in one to two days. Larger properties or sites with complex terrain, steep slopes, or extensive hardscaping may take two to three days. Before the underground work begins, we spend time on-site testing water pressure, marking utility lines, and confirming the zone layout.

What is the best time of year to install a sprinkler system?

Fall is widely considered the best time to install because the soil is pliable, your lawn has the winter to recover from trenching, and the system is fully calibrated and ready when the spring growing season arrives. That said, we install throughout the spring and summer as well. The main constraint is frozen ground in winter, which prevents trenching.

Does installing a sprinkler system damage my lawn?

There will be visible trenching lines after installation, but the lawn recovers relatively quickly. Our crew uses methods that minimize disruption, and most homeowners see their turf fill back in within a few weeks during the growing season. We can also coordinate with sod or overseeding if you're starting fresh.

Do I need a backflow preventer in Massachusetts?

Yes. Massachusetts plumbing code requires a backflow prevention device on every irrigation system that connects to the municipal water supply. The device prevents water that has been in contact with lawn chemicals or soil from flowing back into your home's drinking water. Berardi installs and certifies the appropriate device as part of every installation.

Can you install a sprinkler system in an existing lawn?

Yes. The majority of our installations are on properties with established lawns, landscaping, and hardscaping already in place. We route pipe and position heads to work around what's already there, and the lawn typically recovers from the trenching within a few weeks.

What brands do you install?

We primarily install systems using Hunter and Rain Bird components, including their smart Wi-Fi-enabled controllers. We also work with Toro and Irritrol products. The specific brand and head type is selected based on your property's water pressure, zone layout, and coverage requirements.

Do you handle both residential and commercial installations?

Yes. We install irrigation systems for single-family homes, townhomes, HOA common areas, office parks, retail properties, and larger commercial landscapes across Massachusetts. Commercial projects typically involve more zones and more coordination, but the design and installation process follows the same core methodology.
