Winterizing your irrigation system is important to protect it from extreme cold, and so that you don’t get unnecessary damage or higher costs for repairs. You can do it yourself relatively easily, or you can have Berardi Irrigation take care of your winterization for an affordable price.
Pick The Date
Schedule your winterization before the first frost of the season. You need to make sure that when the frost hits, your system has been winterized. If there’s any water left in the system it could freeze and cause damage to your system. If you’re going to hire professional help, you’ll want to schedule your winterization appointment as soon as possible.
Clear The Lines
Next, turn on each zone’s individual valve – at full force – until the water coming out of it runs completely clear. This will ensure there’s no dirt or sediment left in the lines. Once this is complete you’ll want to drain the lines of water.
Turn Off The Water Supply
Shut off the main supply to your irrigation system at the source (typically a hose bib or faucet) using a manual valve. Better yet, install an automatic valve that you can control with the flip of a switch.
Drain The Water
If needed, continue to run the system until no more water comes out before you begin blow-outs. This will help get the bulk of the water out of the lines.
Begin The Blow Out
Hook up the air compressor to the irrigation system, and make sure they are flush with one another so no pressure is lost. You’ll want to start the pressure low and slowly raise it, as too much air pressure can cause bursts in the tubing system.
Shut Off Your Controller
You can now turn off your irrigation system controller and even take out the battery. Your system is successfully winterized and ready for startup next year.
