Irrigation systems are a great tool to help you take care of your lawn and other parts of your landscape. There are so many benefits to adding an irrigation system to your property, including saving time and energy watering your plants. But not all irrigation systems are built the same, and there are actually quite a few different types of irrigation systems. So how do you know which one is the right choice or best for your property? Luckily we’ve outlined all the different types of irrigation systems and we can help guide you through the decision making process.
Sprinkler Based Irrigation System
These are certainly the most common type of irrigation system, especially for residential homes and small businesses. Sprinkler irrigation systems can be used in the widest range of environments and properties, so they are really considered to be the most versatile types of irrigation system.
Underground Drip Irrigation Systems
Drip irrigation works in an entirely different way from traditional sprinkler irrigation. Instead of sprinkling water to plants above ground, drip irrigation works by providing water straight to the roots of the plant underneath the ground, hence the “drip”. This is a great option because it actually conserves a fair amount of water compared to the sprinkler or surface irrigation. It’s also quite effective because it provides water straight to the plants. However, a lot goes into setting up an irrigation of this style and it’s typically more expensive than the alternatives.
Surface Irrigation System
Surface style irrigation systems are definitely the most simple and least expensive type. However this method only works for certain types of properties, typically ones with a large or many hills. In this instance a water source is placed on top of a hill and then gravity brings the water to other parts of your landscaping. While it is simple, it’s not a very efficient method and can waste a fair bit of water. It’s also possible that it will leave certain areas of your property over or under watered, which is why you really need the right shaped property for optimal use.
