Form or Function?
Before you start, you want to establish what the purpose of your lighting is. Is it decorative or more functional? Is it meant to set the ambience for outdoor gatherings, or are you trying to increase security by illuminating the far reaches of your backyard property? Either way there are a myriad of options to choose from.
Choosing The Right Style
Once you have the general purpose of your lighting, it’s time to get into the different style options you have available to you. This is where it can get complicated, but also quite fun and interesting. You can go with something more modern and minimal, or you can go with something more vintage and classic. Alternatively, you might want to go with a lighting fixture that isn’t seen at all and is rather tucked away into the landscape to emphasize different plants or fixtures around your property.
Lighting Techniques
There are three main lighting techniques we see most commonly. The first is called uplighting and it is done by placing a light directly below a landscaping element to illuminate just that object and help it stand out. The second is called backlighting, which involves placing the fixture behind the object or plant and allows light to bleed around it and onto the open lawn. Finally we have shadowing, which is a technique that is used to create unique and elegant shadows all around the property. This is a style heavy technique, and while it isn’t quite as functional it can create a beautiful effect.
