Getting Your Irrigation System Ready for Spring

March 17, 2020 By devenbwm

How do you get your irrigation system ready for the warm spring weather? There are a few steps to take in order to make sure your lawn and plants look their best all season long. After a long winter, maybe you need a reminder on how to set up your sprinkler system. It is a process, and sometimes a professional needs to step in. Here are some tips to get you started:

Check if the Ground is Frozen

Is winter conditions really over on the ground? You will have to check to see if the ground is still frozen. Dig roughly one foot down into the soil, and if your shovel hits frozen ground, you should wait a couple of weeks before performing another test. You shouldn’t start your sprinkler system if the ground remains frozen. It could cause a break in the water lines while the sprinkler system is being fired up. It could also break later if the ground ends up freezing the water and cracking the water line. If you need to water your lawn in between waiting, you’re gonna have to resort to a hose or a hose sprinkler. Don’t worry, it will only be temporary!

Start Your Control Panel

The control panel is the brain of the sprinkler system and this is where dewinterization needs a head start. Commonly installed outdoors, you will need to get the control panel started and check out the actual settings for the date, scheduling, and irrigation zones. Check on the battery and see if you need to replace it at all. You should if it’s older than six months. It may be possible to find your sprinkler system’s original documentation online using the panel’s model number if you don’t have it on hand.

Opening the Main Valve to Start Your Sprinkler System

Gradually open the main water valve, but don’t do it too quick because it could push water and air through the system too fast. Slowly open the main valve and make sure the water is flowing. Then you can let the water go into the main pipe. Every couple of minutes, open the valve wider until it’s fully open.
