It happens: you shut down your sprinklers for the winter and now that spring’s rolled around, you forgot how to use them. According to the EPA, nearly 20% of Americans own an irrigation system, but not all use them correctly. If this sounds like you (or if you just “forgot” because of the “winter”), Berardi Irrigation has got you covered. Below, we’ve made an all-inclusive guide about your sprinklers to help you for the warmer months ahead.
When to Use Your Sprinklers:
You should aim to use your sprinklers 2-3 times per week. As tempting as it is to overwater, your lawn isn’t that thirsty. It’s best to aim for 1-1.5 inches of water by the end of the week.
What Time You Should Use Your Sprinklers:
It depends on where you live. If you live in harsh climates, you can run your sprinklers between 6AM and 10 AM. If you’re located in hotter climates, you can run your sprinklers early in the morning (between 6am and 8am), but you’ll need to run them again later in the afternoon or early evening. By watering in the morning, your lawn is able to absorb the water, allowing it to reach its roots, before the sun rises. (One thing to note here: if you decide to turn them on at night, your lawn is at a greater risk of developing fungal growth.)
What You Should Do When it Rains:
Ideally, nothing. With a rain sensor added to your sprinklers, you won’t need to worry about when your sprinklers are going to turn on during the drizzle.
What to Do if Rodents Like Your Sprinklers:
Congratulations! Your lawn looks good enough to eat. Consider using pet-repellant sprays near your sprinklers, animal traps, or even leaving out water for them.
When You Should Clean and Check Your Sprinklers:
Clean lawns and dirty sprinklers make a bad pairing. If you care about the way your lawn looks, you should care about how your sprinklers do, too. It’s best to get your sprinklers cleaned twice a year to prevent clogging. Service times for your sprinklers are the same; opt to get them maintenanced twice a year.
