6 Most Commonly Found Weeds in New England

August 31, 2022 By devenbwm

Here in Massachusetts, we are no strangers to weeds. In fact, there are a number of weed species that are common to our area. If you’re a homeowner, it’s important to be able to identify these plants so that you can remove them from your property before they take over. Here is a list of the 5 most commonly found weeds in New England, along with some characteristics on how to identify them from each other.

Invasive Plants Pose a Threat to Your Lawn & Garden

Several invasive plant species pose a threat to our environment, including Japanese knotweed, garlic mustard, and common buckthorn. These plants can easily take over your front lawn or backyard if left unchecked. If you are an avid gardener, it’s important to be on the lookout for these plants so that you can remove them before they cause too much damage.

New England Common Weed #1: Japanese Knotweed

Japanese knotweed is a fast-growing, perennial plant that can reach up to six feet tall. It has large, heart-shaped leaves and clusters of small, white flowers. Japanese knotweed is often found in disturbed areas, such as roadsides and construction sites.

New England Common Weed #2: Poison Ivy

Poison ivy is a common weed that is found in many parts of the United States. It is a woody vine that can grow up to 50 feet long. Poison ivy has three shiny green leaves that are arranged in a cluster. The leaves are usually found on a red stem. Poison ivy can cause a severe allergic reaction in some people, so it is important to be careful when handling this plant.

For those who have small children or pets at home, it is also important to be on the lookout for poison ivy.

New England Common Weed #3: Dandelion

Dandelions are one of the most common weeds in New England. They are easily recognizable by their bright yellow flowers and long, white root system. Dandelions are often found in lawns and gardens. They can be difficult to control because they reproduce quickly.

New England Common Weed #4: Crabgrass

Crabgrass is a common weed that is found in many parts of the United States. It is a grassy plant that can grow up to two feet tall. Crabgrass has long, narrow leaves that are usually found in a cluster. The leaves are usually green, but they can also be red or purple. Crabgrass is often found in lawns and gardens.

New England Common Weed #5: Common Buckthorn

Common buckthorn is a fast-growing, invasive shrub that can reach up to 20 feet tall. It has dark green leaves and small, black berries. Common buckthorn is often found in disturbed areas, such as roadsides and construction sites. This plant can quickly take over your yard if left unchecked.

New England Common Weed #6: Creeping Charlie

Creeping charlie is a common weed that is found in many parts of the United States. Most easily identifiable by its small, purple flowers, creeping charlie is a perennial plant that can grow up to six inches tall. It has long, heart-shaped leaves that are often found in a cluster. Creeping charlie is often found in lawns and gardens.
